What are familiar spirits?

Definition:

1. a spirit or demon that serves or prompts an individual.

2. the spirit of a dead person invoked by a medium to advise or prophesy.

Witchcraft, consulting the dead, fortune tellers, worshipping ancestral spirits, seeing the spirits of loved ones whether awake or recurring in dreams, imaginary friends are demonic spirits. These demons are referred to as familiar spirits as they are familiar with your desire and then they manifest accordingly. Satan cannot read your mind but observes and entices your behaviour accordingly. Example, how often you have heard people say that they have seen the ghost of their dead loved ones or their loved one (who has died) has contacted them by playing a favourite song in the house etc. Spooky? Indeed! The dead are dead. They cannot communicate or contact you on earth. The demonic spirits take on the form of your loved one to mislead you. Satan is a liar. He will deceive you. When you are vulnerable you become a greater target to accepting the lies. Check what your vices are- addictions (substance abuse, tv, eating, cell phones whatever it is), reading about magic, tarot card readings, tealeaves…. Instead read the word of God and it will bear good fruit.

The bible tells us that we are not to be involved with such spirits. Below are just a few scriptures but there are quite a lot of bible verses providing us with the instruction not to surrender to such activity.

Leviticus 19:31 “Do not turn to mediums or necromancers; do not seek them out, and so make yourselves unclean by them: I am the Lord your God.

Leviticus 20:6 “If a person turns to mediums and necromancers, whoring after them, I will set my face against that person and will cut him off from among his people.

Deuteronomy 18:14 For these nations, which you are about to dispossess, listen to fortune-tellers and to diviners. But as for you, the Lord your God has not allowed you to do this.

Deuteronomy 18:10-12 There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord. And because of these abominations the Lord your God is driving them out before you.

Revelation 21:8 But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulphur, which is the second death.”

Acts 19:19 And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted the value of them and found it came to fifty thousand pieces of silver.

Micah 5:12 And I will cut off sorceries from your hand, and you shall have no more tellers of fortunes.

Why would you ask the dead about the living?

Isaiah 8:19 And when they say to you, “Inquire of the mediums and the necromancers who chirp and mutter,” should not a people inquire of their God? Should they inquire of the dead on behalf of the living?

Satan is a liar

2 Corinthians 11:14-15 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So, it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.

The Dead are dead, they cannot contact you!

Job 7:9-10 As the cloud fades and vanishes, so he who goes down to Sheol does not come up; he returns no more to his house, nor does his place know him anymore.

Ecclesiastes 9:5-6 For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten. Their love and their hate and their envy have already perished, and forever they have no more share in all that is done under the sun.

Rebuke familiar spirits

If you are involved with such spirits, renounce the act, ask the Lord for forgiveness, then rebuke that spirit that is bothering you or that you are involved with in the name of Yeshua and sin no more.

Matthew 18:18 Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
